return to patterns

In the spring of 1997, I decided that I wanted to buy my very first set of dishes. Until then, I had used a set that had been cobbled together with unwanted dishes from my parents and the odd cereal bowl I had picked up along the way. After much searching, I became disappointed - I could not find a set of dishes I liked. Some were too "foofy" - flowers gushing at the edges, pastel colors - and some were just plain ugly. I wanted something whimsical and unique.

I had been to the Terria Mia ceramic studio on 24nd Street (in San Francisco) painting coffee cups with my friend Tiger the Fall before. It was really soothing to sit and paint and converse. So I went to Terra Mia in hopes I could find what I wanted. They had a deal on whole sets. I purchased all my pieces in advance (for a four place settings).

The theme I decided on was bugs. Stylized bugs, mind you (Darcy has suggested painting roaches - I flat out refused). It all started with the dragonfly stencil I found and modified to my liking.

Anyway, I just finished the set in the fall of 1998 (whew!). I still have two more pieces to photograph - a large serving dish and a large serving bowl. We now use the dishes every day.
