How we named Cypress Rae Mars
No it's not after the band Cypress Hill! We picked out future children names from movie credits. In the darkness we tried them on, actors & crew alike, post production & sound. Divining the future and storing away the striking ones. Then I would jump in Peter's lap and giggle and wiggle & kiss his face till everyone else had left the place. Watching the movie Spy Games, the city Cyprus flashed large on the screen and I thought hmmm.... Cypress, that is nice. I told Peter he agreed, immediately. We thought though it was a boys name and we would call him Cy. Eventually though this name sorta fell by the way side as we focused on Valentino, after the famous MotoGP racer Valentino Rossi and Isabella. After Cy was born we tried on many names, but none seemed to fit; Madeline, Isabella, Sophia...and then my aunt Jane reminded Peter of Cy. She had asked what names we had thought of and Peter listed the ones above. She said, wasn't there another one? One that could be for a boy or girl? On the next day, Friday we decided to try it on. And when we remembered the Rumi poem Steven Lee gave Cy as a blessing as well as the reference to cypresses in our vows (two up (on motorcycles) curved like cypress trees under the wind of our advancing speed) it all seemed right. I'm not sure when Rae came up, I was downstairs, Peter in the kitchen with some guests...he shouted down, what about Cypress Rae? It was from the artist who wrote the song that was playing when my water broke, Jack the Ripper, by Link Wray. We obviously weren't going to name her Cypress Link. Strangely enough, Rae was a name I had written down in my journal years ago with Isabella, so that did it for me.... Brooke suggested Bimbo Mars, after the club where it all started, but.....we don't have enough money for that kind of therapy! |
